Information: Gohan made his first appearance in Dragonball chapter 196 when his father, Son Goku took him to a meet-up with all of his friends on Kamesennin's island. It was expected to be an ordinary meet-up, but it quickly turned into a day that none of the characters would forget. Raditz, Goku's older brother and Gohan's uncle, appeared to ask Goku why he had not purged the planet. After discovering Goku's amnesia, he explained that the two of them were aliens from Vegetasei. Goku had been sent to Earth as an infant to destroy it, but after injuring his head as a child, he forgot his mission.
Raditz kidnapped Gohan after Goku refused to help him and the other remaining Saiyajin's with their planet purging. He took Gohan to his space pod, telling Goku that he would have to kill one hundred humans in a day to get Gohan back.
To make a long story short, Piccolo defeated Raditz but ended up killing Goku in the process. He accidentally revealed to Vegeta and Nappa through Raditz's scouter that the dragonballs existed, resulting in the two other Saiyajins interest in coming to Earth. Raditz warned that they would appear in a year and that they were both much more powerful than him.
Piccolo, having witnessed Gohan's sudden burst of power in the fight with Raditz, decided to take him as his pupil. Gohan found himself kidnapped again. Piccolo left Gohan in the wild for six months in order to toughen him up. He had previously been too much of a crybaby to fight.
After six months in the wild and six months of training with Piccolo, the Saiyajins arrived. Despite his training, Gohan still froze up throughout the first half of the battle, terrified for his life. He finally got enough courage to attack Nappa right before his father's arrival, but Nappa became enraged by the fact that Gohan had drew blood from him. He threw a powerful blast at Gohan with every intention of killing him. Both Gohan and Kuririn watched in shock as Piccolo jumped in front of the blast, taking it for Gohan. As he lay dieing, he told Gohan that he had enjoyed his time with him and that Gohan was his first true friend.
Enraged by Piccolo's death, Gohan attacked Nappa with a powerful Masenko. Even though he had unleashed some of his hidden strength, Nappa still wasn't damaged. Nappa again attempted to kill Gohan. Right before his foot was to stomp down on him, his father appeared, saving him. The battle ended with Gohan turning into an Oozaru (great ape) against Vegeta. Vegeta managed to cut off Gohan's tail, but the weight of an Oozaru falling on him ended his battle with Goku and his comrades. He left for one of Freeza's planets.
After the death of their friends, Gohan, Kuririn, and Bulma all went to Namekusei, Piccolo's home planet, to revive them with the Dragonballs. While there, they met up with enemies such as Frieza and the Ginyu Force. Gohan's two major fights throughout the Frieza saga were with Recoom and Frieza himself. He nearly died in both battles. He was narrowly saved by his father after Recoom snapped his neck. Kuririn saved his life by distracting Frieza from him when he was literally having his head crushed to the ground. During Goku's fight with Freeza, the remaining people left on Namekusei were wished to back to Earth, Gohan included. Goku disappeared after the fight and was assumed dead until everyone summoned Porunga months later. He told them that Goku was still alive but wasn't ready to return home.
Not much later, Freeza appeared on Earth. A new super saiyajin, Trunks, appeared to take him on. He told Goku that he was from twenty years in the future and that everyone would be killed by the jinzouningen excluding Goku, who would die of a heart virus, and Gohan, who would live on for thirteen years and train Trunks before also being killed by the jinzouningen. Gohan trained with his father and Piccolo for three years before the jinzouningen's arrival.
Gohan didn't hold much of a role in the jinzouningen arc up until when Cell arrived. He and his father went into the Room of Spirit and Time (known as the Hyperbolic Time Chamber in the American version) where they would get a year's worth of training in one day. While in there, Gohan was able to transform into a super saiyajin. The manga does not state how he achieved it, but the anime tells that Gohan became one after becoming angry with himself for his previous failures during fights.
Goku and Gohan came out of the Room of Spirit and Time earlier than expected. They most likely got around nine to ten months of training instead of a whole year due to that. While they were in the chamber, Cell announced that he was going to hold a tournament called the Cell Games. Gohan didn't understand why his father was being so casual about the Cell Games at that time, but Goku actually had it planned that Gohan would be the one to destroy Cell.
When the Cell Games began, Goku fought first. After fighting for some time, he forfeited to Cell, saying that he had another contender for the monster. Everyone was shocked beyond belief when Goku announced that the next fighter would be Gohan (on a funny note, the news reporters thought that Goku was announcing a lunch break, due to gohan being the word for meal or rice in Japanese; they started calling Gohan the "bento delivery boy").
Everyone was even more shocked to learn that Gohan was in fact stronger than Goku. He fought Cell half-heartedly for the first half of their fight. He told Cell that he did not enjoy fighting like his father did. In an attempt to end the fight, Gohan then told Cell about how he would draw out an incredible power every time he got angry. It had the opposite effect, as it made Cell all the more eager to draw out that power.
Cell first tried to enrage Gohan by harming him. When he learned that wouldn't work, he created miniature version of himself to fight the other warriors. Everyone was being pummeled by the miniature-Cells when Mr. Satan threw the detached head of Juurokugou (Android #16) over in front of Gohan. Juurokugou told Gohan that he understood Gohan's dislike for fighting, but that Gohan needed to release his strength in order to protect the things they loved. Cell crushed Juurokugou's head, causing Gohan to errupt in anger. He transformed into the ascended state of Super Saiyajin, now known as Super Saiyajin 2.
Gohan began to toy with Cell. He knew he was much stronger than Dr. Gero's creation at that point and just wanted to torture Cell. At one point, he had blown off a majority of Cell's body with a Kamehameha. Goku pleaded with Gohan to end the fight, but Gohan told him that he wished to Cell suffer more. It was a mistake that would cost the life of Goku. After Gohan punched Juuhachigou (Android #18) out of Cell, Cell bloated himself up in his imperfect state. He revealed to everyone that he would self destruct. If anyone were to attack him, he would explode on impact.
Goku decided to teleport himself and Cell away to Kaiousama's planet. He gave his farewell to his friends on Gohan before sacrifising his life. Gohan felt terrible because he felt it was his fault that his father died.
Before anyone even had time to mourn, Cell returned, stronger than ever. He killed Trunks, which got him attacked at by Vegeta. Right as Cell was going to send a blast at Vegeta to kill him, Gohan jumped in the way, taking the attack himself. No longer having use of his left arm, he felt that all hope was lost as Cell began to charge a huge Kamehameha.
Goku spoke to Gohan through Kaiousama and told him to not give up. Gohan blasted a Kamehameha back at Cell, but it first appeared that Cell would overpower him. Goku told Gohan not to worry about damaging the planet because the dragonballs could restore anything that was destroyed. It was right when Vegeta distracted Cell with a blast that Gohan took the opportunity to pour all of his strength into his beam, destroying Cell.
After the Cell Games, Goku decided to remain dead. Gohan went on to live the next seven years with his mother and new younger brother, Goten, in peace. The next time we see Gohan is when he's sixteen years old. His mother decided that he should go to high school. It was there that he met his future wife, Videl Satan, the daughter of the man who stole his credit for defeating Cell, Mr. Satan.
Gohan wanted to fight crime but not be singled out at school, so he had Bulma make him an outfit that many saw as comical or hideous. He called his alter-ego, "The Great Saiyaman." Gohan went on to fight crime in Satan City before being discovered by Videl. In the manga, Videl found out Saiyaman was Gohan through his voice. She tricked him into telling her his identity by asking "Gohan" a question. When he responded to the wrong name, she knew it was him. In the anime, Videl discovers that it was him after he got a scratch on his cheek by a dragon he knew from the mountains. She saw the scratch on Gohan's cheek the next morning at school and told him she knew that Saiyaman and Gohan were one in the same.
Videl told Gohan that she would keep his identity a secret so long as he participated in the Tenkaichi Budoukai and taught her to fly. He complied. It was when he taught her to fly that the two of them most likely started developing feelings beyond friendship towards each other.
A while later, the Tenkaichi Budoukai took place. Goku appeared after telling everyone that he would come to the world of living for one day to participate. The day of the tournament turned out to be more chaotic than anyone expected, as an evil wizard, Babidi, had placed several of his servants in the tournament. The Kaioshin and Kibito, also appeared in the tournament.
One of Babidi's servants, Spopovitch, fought Videl. At first she appeared to be winning, but after breaking his neck, only to have him set it back in place, the tables were turned. He began to brutally beat her (a majority of it was even taken out of the American version due to it's brutality). Gohan was furious with him and nearly went out to attack him, had he not been stopped by his father.
Gohan fought after Videl. His competitor was Kibito. Kibito told Gohan that he wished to see him transform into a Super Saiyajin. At first, Gohan was reluctant. It was only after Piccolo gave him his approval that he transformed. Kaioshin warned everyone that Spopovitch and Yamu were going to drain Gohan's energy and that they would have to follow them to wherever they would take it. The two jumped out at Gohan after he turned into a Super Saiyajin 2. Gohan was going to defend himself, but Kaioshin paralized Gohan by some means. Spopovitch and Yamu drained Gohan's energy and left him for dead.
Everyone left to follow them while Kibito healed Gohan. After being healed, Gohan and Kibito also took off after Babidi's servants. Videl originally went with them, but when she realized she couldn't keep up, she decided to stay back.
When they arrived, one of Babidi's top servants, Dabura, turned Kuririn and Piccolo into stone and killed Kibito. Gohan, Vegeta, Goku, and Kaioshin all followed him down into Babidi's lair where they each fought an opponent. Gohan fought Dabura, although he struggled to keep up. Vegeta made many comments about how rusty Gohan had gotten over the years from lack of training.
The fight ended when Babidi decided he would give everyone a new opponent. They didn't realize that the new opponent was Vegeta until it was too late. Babidi made Vegeta a Majin, which started a fight between Goku and Vegeta.
Gohan and Kaioshin went on to stop Buu's revival during Goku and Vegeta's fight. Despite their best efforts, the monster was revived. Buu made Gohan's Super Saiyajin 2 speed look like nothing. He began to pummel the two of them and killed Dabura. When Buu was attacking Kaioshin, Gohan flew at him trying to attack him. Buu blasted Gohan, leaving him near dead in a forest somewhere away from where everyone was fighting.
After the first fight with Buu, Kaioshin and the newly revived Kibito went to take Gohan to their home planet. Kaioshin planned for Gohan to release the legendary Z Sword. Due to Gohan's ki being so low and his eventual leaving of the planet, everyone believed him to be dead.
While on Kaioshin's planet, Gohan was able to release the Z Sword. He trained with it until his father appeared on the planet and the two of them accidentily broke it. Rou Kaioshin appeared from the broken sword and offered to unleash Gohan's hidden strength if Goku would allow him to kiss a woman. Goku first suggested Videl, but Gohan became upset with him for the idea. He eventually decided on Bulma.
After hours and hours, Gohan's power-up was through. He went back to Earth and fought Buu, originally appearing to be eons ahead of the monster. It wasn't until Buu absorbed Piccolo and Gotenks that Gohan began to struggle. Goku, seeing Gohan's struggle, decided to go back to Earth. Rou Kaioshin gave him his life and he was off. He was going to fuse with Gohan using the Potara earrings, but Gohan lost his earring. Eventually, Gohan too was absorbed by Buu.
Gohan doesn't appear again until he's rescued from Buu's body by Goku and Vegeta. Buu, being reduced to a child-like state, was furious. He destroyed the planet. Gohan, Piccolo, Goten, and Trunks were all killed. Gohan doesn't contribute much to the Buu saga after that point. He donated his energy to Goku's Genki Dama, but that was about it. Videl and Chichi were both very relieved to see him alive.
Ten years after Buu's defeat, Gohan appears again. At twenty-six, he was married to Videl and had a five-year old daughter, Pan. He gave up fighting to live a peaceful life as a scholar.
